United Against Racism

The Nipissing University Black Association for Student Expression (NUBASE), in partnership with Lakers Basketball, invites you to attend the 2nd Annual With1VoiceNight:”Shoot for Change” Game against 705 Challenge Cup rival Laurentian Voyageurs on Saturday, February 4, 2023 at the Robert J. Surtees Student Athletics Centre. The Women’s game will take place at 6 p.m. followed by the Men’s game at 8 p.m.

How can you support?

Created by NUBASE Co-Founder and President Taijon Eccleston-Graham, Shoot for Change raises funds for BIPOC student bursaries and offers student-athletes a platform to advocate for marginalized communities. NUBASE hopes that through initiatives like this, others will be inspired to give back to their community and make a positive impact. 

Last year’s inaugural game was a huge success, raising over $18,000 in support of BIPOC bursaries. Funds raised were used to establish the Warren Lindsay Bursary, named after Warren Lindsay, Director of Services at the Nipissing University Student Union (NUSU) in recognition of his tireless support of BIPOC students. 

In addition to Nipissing, six other Ontario University Athletics (OUA) teams now participate in Shoot for Change including Brock, Guelph, Laurentian, McMaster, Ontario Tech and Windsor. Taijon’s outstanding leadership has also been recognized throughout the league as the recipient of the 2021-2022 OUA Ken Shields Award and OUA's Inaugural Recognition Award for Social Change. 

"This event was an amazing opportunity to use the platform of sports to address the reoccurring issue regarding the lack of financial opportunities for students of colour. The success of Shoot for Change successfully enabled the ability to start the Warren Lindsay Bursary, the first ever BIPOC student bursary offered at Nipissing University. It also caught the eye of other notable schools in Ontario, so much so that other schools will be adopting the event this year.”

Ways to Support

There are many ways to offer your support. You can:

  • Encourage your friends and family to attend the game or make a donation 

How will funds be used?

All funds raised will support the Warren Lindsay Bursary Fund for BIPOC students at Nipissing University. 

How is the bursary distributed?

The Warren Lindsay Bursary is awarded to a Nipissing University student in any degree program who identifies as BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, People of Colour). The recipient must demonstrate financial need. Award value: $1,000
